Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore was started in January 1955. The Medical Council of India (MCI) granted credit to KMC Mangalore in 1958, with the first graduating class. Identification by the General Medical Council of Great Britain and the Malaysian Medical Council followed soon.

The College was first associated to Karnataka University and later in 1965 to Mysore University, followed by association to Mangalore University in 1980. 

The premier co-educational college is located in the charming hill station of Manipal in Karnataka. Initially it was set up with just the pre-clinical section at Manipal and the clinical training was conducted in Mangalore. In 1969, the clinical program started at Manipal and the Kasturba Medical College started functioning as a full-fledged independent college.
