It is that season once again. Every private medical college that fulfils the norms and recognised with medical council of India (MCI) have got long queues of applicants outside their offices with requests—either to apply for postgraduate (PG) entrance tests or enhance their chances to get admission in the management quota reserved from number of existing seats in various disciplines in their institutions. For the PG medical courses of MD/MS/Diploma in private medical colleges, admission through management quota is permitted by the MCI only within the previously approved number of seats in the respective course, viz. maximum 25-50% of the total seats. The last is in great demand since the total seats sanctioned by the MCI are linked by a fixed ratio to the limited number of seats given to the PG entrance exams at state level or autonomous level and therefore selection on merit rank basis.

The existing strength of PG seats in India in various disciplines is known to everyone. These have been accessed from the websites of the MCI and National Board of Examinations (NBE) and may have changed slightly from the time that they were accessed since the review and sanction of seats is an ongoing process.3,4 Overall, there are about 22 000 seats at the PG level and about 35 000 UG seats.

The 2-year diploma course of the MCI was meant to serve the needs of the community for specialists outside academia at the secondary and primary levels, whereas the degree course was meant for the academic stream and to provide care at the tertiary level.
